Osteoporosis: a new study confirms the benefits of the Mediterranean diet

Previous work revealed the benefits of a Mediterranean diet for patients with osteoporosis. A new study confirms the positive effect of this diet on the decrease in bone mass.

In 2016, a study conducted by researchers from the University of Würzburg in Germany, published in the Jama Internal Medicine, revealed that the Mediterranean diet, also called Cretan diet, could be an ally for people who suffer from osteoporosis. This skeletal disease, mainly related to aging, particularly affects women from menopause and is responsible for nearly 400 000 fractures each year in France.

According to the work of this German team, menopausal women who follow a Mediterranean diet (consisting of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, fish, cereals, nuts ...) would be less likely to make a fracture of the hip.

Today, a new European study confirms these results. This time it was British researchers from the University of East Anglia in the UK who were interested in the benefits of this diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil and other healthy foods and good for health. Scientists followed more than a year, more than 1142 volunteers, aged 65 to 79 years. Some followed the Mediterranean diet while others fed in a "normal" way.

The works, published in theAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reveal that the Cretan diet had no obvious impact on people whose bone density was normal. On the other hand, according to the results of the study, this healthy diet had a positive effect on patients who suffer from osteoporosis and whose bone density is sensitized. It is at the level of the femoral neck, one of the areas of the body most affected by fractures in people with osteoporosis, that this type of diet has been shown to be the most beneficial for increasing bone density. .
